Softball drops a pair to Vanguard

ORANGE, Calif. -  Visiting Vanguard University came into Hart Park and handed the Chapman University softball team its most lopsided defeat of the season in a doubleheader sweep of the Panthers on Thursday afternoon. The Lions captured the first game 16-2 and then won the second game 11-1. With the losses, Chapman will finish below .500 for the first time since 2002.

Game 1: Vanguard 16, Chapman 2
A 1-1 tie in the fifth quickly got out of hand as the Lions scored three times in the inning to chase Chapman junior RHP Ally Waffle. Vanguard then added four more in the sixth thanks to a three-run homer by C Angela St. Croix.

Already leading 8-2 heading into the seventh inning, Vanguard scored eight runs in the inning to bury Chapman. The Lions scored all eight despite just one hit reaching the outfield grass - four bunt singles, three walks and a hit batter. Vanguard totaled 16 hits in the game.

Chapman's offense came with help from freshman C Michelle Pitts, who led off the second with a double, leading to the Panthers' first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from sophomore IF Katelyn Geary. Pitts had two of Chapman's five hits. Junior IF Dani Brown hit her third home run of the season in the sixth to make it 8-2.

Game 2: Vanguard 11, Chapman 1
The Lions' picked right up from Game 1 with a four-run first inning, including a solo home run by April Glenn and back-to-back run-producing doubles. Vanguard (24-21) added two in second, one in the fourth and then four in the sixth to earn the ‘run-rule' victory.

The Panthers were held to just three hits, including an RBI single by junior IF Melanie Villarroel, which plated senior OF Erin Dudzinski in the third inning. Dudzinski had stolen second base after a two-out single. It was her 50th career stolen base and she is Chapman's all-time stolen base leader.

Chapman's freshman RHP Lindsey Delamater suffered her first defeat of the season (4-1). The loss marked Chapman's (16-20) sixth consecutive - a season-high.
