Strong pitching gives softball double-header sweep over Emerson
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team got complete games from both its starters against Emerson College Sunday evening at El Camino Real Park, giving the team its first double-header sweep of the season. Behind the pitching of sophomores Rhianna Stepler-Camp and Katie Terry¸ the Panthers pulled out a 1-0 win in the first game and 2-1 victory in game 2.
Game 1: Chapman 1, Emerson 0
Chapman (3-9) was held without a hit by Emerson starting pitcher Kelsey Tuthill for the first five innings but in the bottom of the sixth inning junior C Michelle Pitts reached on a double to center field. Sophomore OF Kerry Peterson then brought home pinch runner Carly Foerster with a triple to left field for what would be the decisive run. Tuthill allowed just three hits in her seven innings of work.

Stepler-Camp then closed out the win by retiring the Emerson batters in order in the seventh inning. In seven innings of work, the sophomore had one strikeout with no walks while allowing eight hits.
Game 2: Chapman 2, Emerson 1
It didn't take the Panthers nearly as long to get their bats going in the second game as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Once again Pitts and Peterson came up big for the Panthers. After back-to-back walks to start the first inning by junior IF Courtney James and junior OF Jessica Mitchell, Pitts brought home James with an RBI single to right field. Peterson then followed with an infield RBI-hit to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Two runs was all Terry would need as she held Emerson scoreless through the first three innings. In the fourth, OF Bianca Buono came up with an RBI single to right field which narrowed Chapman's lead to 2-1. Terry then retired the Lions in order in each of the remaining innings. The sophomore pitcher allowed five hits and one run with four walks and two strikeouts on the night.
