Bats come alive against Swarthmore for second-straight double header sweep

ORANGE, Calif. – A day after winning a pair of games while scoring a total of three runs, the Chapman University softball team's bats came alive against Swarthmore College on Monday afternoon at El Camino Real Park, earning the team their second double-header sweep in as many days. Chapman scored nine runs over the course of two innings for a 10-2 victory in the first game and then defeated Swarthmore 4-1 in the second game.

Game 1: Chapman 10, Swarthmore 2
Swarthmore (0-2) jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead off of Chapman starting pitcher Nikole Weber, chasing the freshman before she could record an out although she would return to close out the game.

In the bottom of the second inning, Chapman (5-9) brought nine batters to the plate while scoring six runs on five hits to take a 6-2 lead. Sophomore OF Kerry Peterson led off with a base hit followed by an RBI double from sophomore IF Brittany Furlong. With the bases loaded, the big hit of the inning came from junior C Michelle Pitts who had a three-run double. Furlong was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored while Pitts was 1-for-2 with 3 RBI.

The Panthers added three runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead on RBI singles from junior UT C.C. Daly and sophomore IF Kyla Javier. Junior IF Jayme Jarvis capped off the Panthers scoring in the fourth inning with a run-scoring single to right field. Jarvis was 2-for-3 in the first game.

Sophomore P Katie Terry got the win for the Panthers in relief of Weber, going four innings while not allowing a hit or walk and striking out six batters.

Game 2: Chapman 4, Swarthmore 1
In the second game the Panthers trailed 1-0 in the third inning after the Garnet scored an unearned run off of starter Kristen Oechsel. With two outs in the inning, senior OF Kira Kern reached for Swarthmore with a single to center field. She then came in to score on a fielding error by Chapman OF Jessica Mitchell giving Swarthmore a 1-0 lead.

With the scored tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Mitchell led off for Chapman with a walk, setting the table for Pitts who followed with an RBI double to center. Furlong who reached on a fielder's choice scored on a wild pitch to give Chapman a 3-1 lead. The Panthers then added their final run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Peterson. The sophomore finished 2-for-3 in the second game as did Javier.

Oechsel started the game for the Panthers, pitching three innings while allowing just one hit and one unearned run. Sophomore P Rhianna Stepler-Camp got the win for the Panthers in relief as she continued her strong pitching of late, striking out four batters in four innings of work without giving up a walk or a hit.
