Middle of lineup provides spark as Chapman splits doubleheader with Cal Lu
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team continued its strong play at home this season as they split a doubleheader with Cal Lutheran on Monday afternoon at El Camino Real Park, losing the first game 2-0 and then holding on for a 3-2 win in game two. The Panthers are now 5-3 at home, at had won four in a row at El Camino before the loss today to the Regals.
Game 1: Cal Lutheran 2, Chapman 0
After retiring the first two Cal Lutheran (5-14) batters of the
game, Chapman starting RHP Rhianna
Stepler-Camp gave up back-to-back hits. First,
freshman IF Danika Green singled through the left
side followed by an RBI double to left-center field by senior IF
Katie Strang to give the Regals a 1-0 lead in the
first inning.
The Panthers had just one runner in scoring position in the game and that came in the fourth inning after a leadoff walk by junior OF Jessica Mitchell followed by a sacrifice bunt by junior C Michelle Pitts which moved Mitchell up a base. Mitchell was also the only Chapman player with a hit in the game.
Stepler-Camp pitched seven innings for the Panthers, allowing two runs on seven hits for her second complete game of the season.
Game 2: Chapman 3, Cal Lutheran 2
Chapman (6-12) led from start to finish in the second game, but a pair of errors in the top of the seventh inning nearly allowed Cal Lutheran to come back. With Chapman leading 3-1, senior C Courtney Minton reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning. After a single, Chapman committed its second error of the inning which allowed Cal Lutheran to score and narrow the lead to 3-2. Chapman starting RHP Katie Terry then retired the final two batters for her fourth win and fifth complete game of the season.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single up the middle by sophomore IF Brittany Furlong. Then in the third inning, the Panthers added two more runs to take a 3-0 lead highlighted by RBI singles from Furlong and Mitchell.
The 4-6 hitters were 4-for-8 with 3 RBI for the Panthers in the second game.
