Concordia too much for Chapman as it completes season sweep

ORANGE, Calif. – Concordia University completed the season-sweep against the Chapman University softball team with a pair of wins on Thursday evening at El Camino Real Park. The Eagles outscored the Panthers 24-5 during the doubleheader, winning 15-5 in the first game followed by a 9-0 shutout. Concordia won all four games against Chapman this season, outscoring the Panthers 41-8.

Game 1: Concordia 15, Chapman 5
After not getting on the board in the first inning, the No. 4-ranked Eagles scored in each of the final four innings including a pair of six-run innings in the fourth and fifth. Chapman (9-27) led briefly in the first inning after a RBI single by junior C Michelle Pitts which made the score 1-0.

Concordia (44-6) tied the game in the second on a RBI triple by freshman IF Jenna Jorgensen and then tacked on a pair of runs in third to take a 3-1 lead highlighted by another RBI hit from the freshman. Jorgensen finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and was one of eight Eagles' players to have at least one RBI in the game.

With a 3-1 lead, Concordia broke the game open in the fourth inning against Chapman starter Katie Terry (5-14) and reliever Rhianna Stepler-Camp scoring six runs on four RBI singles, an RBI double and a fielder's choice. The Eagles batted around in the fifth to take a 15-2 lead. Chapman batted around itself in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to narrow the score to 15-5 as junior IF Courtney James and sophomore Kerry Peterson had run-scoring singles. Sophomore IF Brittany Furlong also brought in a run as she walked with the bases loaded.

Game 2: Concordia 9, Chapman 0
In the second game the Panthers put together seven hits but were not able to capitalize against Concordia sophomore pitcher Morgan Reiter. Trailing 2-0, Terry and James led off the bottom of the second inning for Chapman with a pair of singles only to see the inning end on a groundball double play.

Over the final three innings Concordia scored seven runs including a three-run, fifth inning highlighted by a solo home run from junior IF Amanda Fama which was her team-leading 14th of the season. Chapman also had the bases loaded in the fifth inning but could not get on the board. This marked the 8th time that the Panthers have been shut out in a game this season.

The Panthers are back on the diamond Friday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer as they look to get head coach Janet Lloyd closer to the 500-win mark. She currently has 496 career victories, all at Chapman.
