Lloyd surpasses 500-wins milestone with sweep of La Sierra

ORANGE, Calif. – Head coach Janet Lloyd surpassed the 500-career wins mark on Saturday as the Chapman University softball team came away with a pair of dominant victories over La Sierra University at El Camino Real Park. Chapman hit four homers in the doubleheader as they won the first game 12-3 and followed that up with a 9-0 shutout.

Lloyd, now in her 18th season as Chapman's head coach has a 501-230 record and is 34 victories away from breaking her father's wins mark. Lisle Lloyd won 534 games as Chapman's head coach from 1983-1998. Not to be overlooked by Lloyd's 500th win, in the second game, freshman RHP Cassie Oregel became the first Chapman pitcher to record a perfect game since Maggie Wilder accomplished the same feat against Thomas More (Ky.) in 2005.

Game 1: Chapman 12, La Sierra 3
After Chapman (5-4) put a run up in the first inning, senior IF Courtney James broke the game open with a three-run homer to left center field in the third inning to give the team a 4-0 lead. The Panthers then sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored six runs on six hits to open up a 10-1 lead. Senior C Michelle Pitts hit her first homer of the season and junior IF Kyla Javier had two hits in the inning including an RBI single. Javier finished a perfect 5-for-5 in the doubleheader including three hits in the first game.

La Sierra (2-14) scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning off of junior RHP Katie Terry to narrow Chapman's lead to 10-3. Junior Cat Ogle came through with the two-run double for La Sierra to narrow the score but Chapman answered with two of its own in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman IF Mindy Gibson ended the game with a walk-off, two-run homer which was the first of her career. Terry (2-1) gave up just one earned run and struck out three in six innings of work.

Game 2: Chapman 9, La Sierra 0
Pitts accounted for the first two runs of the game in the first inning for Chapman. She had an RBI single to score freshman OF Karina Muniz and then came around to score after a pair of wild pitches. Pitts went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI in the game and had five hits total.

Two runs was all the run support that Oregel (2-1) needed as she cruised through five innings, striking out six batters. Oregel now has 15 strikeouts against one walk in her last two outings.

After scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, Chapman put four runs up in the fifth to end with a 9-0 win. For the second-straight game, the Panthers won with a walk-off homer as senior DP Jayme Jarvis hit a two-run shot to center field to end the game.
