Softball goes 5-1 at Tucson Invitational over the weekend

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Chapman University softball team went 5-1 over the weekend at the Tucson Softball Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., its lone loss coming to St. John Fisher (N.Y.) 7-4 on Saturday. The Panthers have now won eight of their last 10 games overall and have more wins in the first month of the 2012 season (11) than they had the entire 2011 season (9).

Chapman (11-6) opened the invitational with an 8-0 shutout over Loras College (Iowa) followed by a 10-2 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). Freshman RHP Cassie Oregel (5-2) one-hit Loras and had 11 strikeouts in the 8-0 win. Junior RHP Katie Terry (3-2) gave up two unearned runs in the win over MSOE.

On Saturday, Chapman opened the day with a 7-4 loss to St. John Fisher. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after a sacrifice fly by sophomore IF Raquel Rinauro and an RBI single by senior OF Andrena Calix. Chapman maintained the lead until the fifth inning when MSOE got to Oregel for five runs and then added two more in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

The second time Loras and Chapman played, freshman RHP Kimmi Takahashi and Terry combined to hold Loras to three runs as Chapman came out on top 5-3 to get back in the win column.

The invitational's final day saw Chapman defeat Medaille College (N.Y.) 10-5 and the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford 5-0. In the wins over MSOE and Pitt-Bradford, junior IF Kyla Javier tied career-highs with three hits in each game and she also tied a career-high with three RBI against Pitt-Bradford. In six games over the weekend, Javier hit .563 with nine hits and seven RBI. Senior C Michelle Pitts hit .526 over the weekend with 10 hits and five RBI.

Chapman's pitching staff combined for a 2.25 ERA while holding opponents to a .200 batting average in the six games. Terry went 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA while Oregel went 2-1 and had 28 strikeouts against seven walks.
