Pitching staff holds Puget Sound scoreless for doubleheader sweep

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team shut out the University of Puget Sound in its doubleheader winning 7-0 and 13-0 at El Camino Real Park on Tuesday night. The Panthers have won their last five games which is their longest streak this season, and have won 10 of their last 12 overall.

Game 1: Chapman 7, Puget Sound 0
Junior IF Stephanie Engle singled to left center, allowing freshman OF Karina Muniz to score the first run of the day for Chapman (13-6) in the first inning. Senior C Michelle Pitts also scored a run in the first inning on a bunt-single by senior IF Courtney James to give the team a 2-0 lead. The Panthers never looked back, scoring three runs in the second, and one run in both the third and fourth innings. James gave Chapman a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning with a solo homer to left, her third of the season.

Puget Sound (2-10) held Chapman scoreless throughout the rest of the game, but couldn't get its offense going against freshman RHP Cassie Oregel (6-2) who earned the win while allowing just four hits and striking out 10 batters over seven innings.

Pitts had a team-high 3 RBI while Engle and James each went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Game 2: Chapman 13, Puget Sound 0
The Panthers once again took the lead in the first inning, scoring four runs, three of which were unearned because of an error by Puget Sound catcher Chrissy Atterson kept the inning alive. Chapman added one more run in the second inning, followed by a big third inning with seven runs to take a 12-0 lead.  In the third, Pitts had a two-run single while junior IF Kyla Javier added a two-run triple to break the game open. Javier finished the game 3-for-3 with two triples.

Junior IF Tatiana Mahshi scored the last run of the game on an RBI double by senior OF C.C. Daly in the fourth to give Chapman a 13-0 lead.

Engle went 3-for-3 with two doubles and 3 RBI in the second game and led the team with five RBI in the doubleheader

Junior RHP Katie Terry (4-2) got the win for the Panthers, allowing just three hits while striking out five. Puget Sound OF Jenica Holt had two of her team's three hits against Terry.

Chapman will play another double header this Thursday against Webster University (Mo.) at El Camino Real Park.
