Bats stay hot as Chapman takes two from Webster

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team continued its winning streak, making it seven in a row, after defeating Webster (Mo.) University in both games of its doubleheader on Thursday night at El Camino Real Park. The Panthers won 10-3 in Game 1 and 11-3 in Game 2.

Game 1: Chapman 10, Webster 3
The game was held scoreless until the fourth inning when Webster scored three runs off of Chapman starting RHP Cassie Oregel. Three-straight RBI hits by Webster, including a run-scoring triple by IF Tabatha Bahre and an RBI double by C Kaytlin Burczak gave the team a 3-0 lead.

Chapman (15-6) came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior IF Courtney James had a two-run triple. Junior IF Kyla Javier then hit a sacrifice fly to bring home James, and even the score at 3-3. Chapman went on to score five more runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth innings to seal the game 10-3. 

Webster (4-10) was held scoreless by Oregel (7-2) who earned the win, allowing eight hits and striking out eight batters over seven innings. Javier had a team-high 3 RBI, while senior C Michelle Pitts went 3-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Game 2: Chapman 11, Webster 3
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by Pitts, which scored senior OF Andrena Calix. Webster tied the score in the second inning, when IF Jessica Arcangel scored on a passed ball.

The game went back and forth with the Panthers scoring two runs in the second on RBI singles by sophomore IF Raquel Rinauro and Calix to take a 3-1 lead. The Gorloks capitalized on a Chapman error in the third inning to even the score at 3-3. Chapman broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs. Rinauro scored on an RBI from junior OF Kerry Peterson breaking ahead to make the score 4-3. The Panthers ended the fourth inning with three more runs, making the score 7-3.

Junior IF Stephanie Engle ended the game in the fifth inning with a towering home run to left field off the foul pole, which made the score 11-3, and scored senior OF Jessica Mitchell and Peterson.

Calix went 3-for-3 with 1 RBI in the second game. Engle led the team with five RBI in the double header, and went 2-for-4 in each of the games. Junior RHP Katie Terry (6-2) got the win for the Panthers, allowing only four hits in the game. 

The Panthers' next doubleheader is against Whittier College on Sunday at 12 p.m. at El Camino Real Park, weather permitting.
