Bats wake up as Chapman beats La Verne

ORANGE, Calif. – A day after being shut out by top-ranked Linfield in two games, the Chapman University softball team's offense rebounded to defeat the University of La Verne in 12-3. The first game of the doubleheader was ruled a 'no contest' after a protest by Chapman in the eighth inning was upheld.

Game 1: No Contest

Game 2: Chapman 12, La Verne 3
Chapman scored three unearned runs in the first inning after the team's inning stayed alive on a dropped foul ball by La Verne's catcher. After the dropped foul ball which would have been the third out of the inning, Chapman junior IF Stephanie Engle gave the team a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to center field. Senior IF Courtney James then came through with an RBI double followed by a run-scoring single by Muniz to up the Panthers' lead to 3-0.

La Verne narrowed the score to 3-2 in the top of the second inning as a pair of runners came in to score on wild pitches by Chapman junior starting RHP Katie Terry (7-3). Aside from the first inning, Terry had a solid outing allowing three runs and six hits over five innings of work, with just one walk.

Holding on to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second, Chapman came back with three more runs to push its lead to 6-2. Two of the runs scored on a throwing error by La Verne's catcher with the third scoring on an RBI single by Peterson. Chapman added one run in the third and five in the fourth to get the win.
