Pioneers sneak up and earn a split from Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. - One-win Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) came to Orange and shocked the Chapman University softball team by earning a doubleheader split with the Panthers at El Camino Real Park on Thursday afternoon. The Pioneers added their second victory to an overall record of 2-23, defeating Chapman 5-4 in the first game before the Panthers rallied for a 4-1 win in Game 2.

Game 1: Lewis & Clark 5, Chapman 4
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning, Lewis & Clark 1B Moriah Lane cranked a three-run homer to left-center to put the Pioneers up 4-3. Chapman (17-10) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit when sophomore IF Raquel Rinauro led off with a walk and later came around to score on a wild pitch.

But Lewis & Clark scratched across another run in the seventh on a two-out, full count RBI single from SS Caroline DeVincenzi to plate the winning run.

The Panthers jumped out to that 3-1 lead thanks in part to a pair of runs in the second inning. Chapman freshman RHP Cassie Oregel singled and junior IF Kyla Javier came around to score on an error. Senior OF Andrena Calix then drove in Oregel two batters later on an infield single. Calix finished 3-for-4 in the game.

Game 2: Chapman 4, Lewis & Clark 1
Lewis & Clark struck first with a run in the fourth inning off Chapman junior RHP Katie Terry (8-3) with an RBI single from Lane after a pair of walks. However, the Panthers struck back with a two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and Terry settled down for the complete game two-hitter.

Chapman capitalized on a bases loaded fielding error by the Pioneers off the bat of Javier to score its first two runs of the game. And then in the fifth inning, junior OF Kerry Peterson had a run-scoring single and junior IF Stephanie Engle followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Panthers up 4-1.

The Panthers hit the road for their next six games, including four against two of Division III's top-ranked teams, No. 11 Redland and No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Chapman returns home April 17 to face Vanguard University at 3 p.m.
