Pitts and Javier named All-West Region after career-best seasons
ORANGE, Calif. – Both senior C Michelle Pitts and junior IF Kyla Javier had career-years for the Chapman University softball team in 2012, and both were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-West Region teams which were announced on Monday. Both players are first-time selections as Pitts was selected to the second team while Javier earned third team.
Pitts and Javier are Chapman's first all-region selections since Jayme Jarvis earned first team in 2010. The Panthers last had more than one all-region selection in a season in 2008 when the team had three representatives.
Pitts was tops on the team as a senior in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.495), doubles (13), RBI (30), hits (54) and slugging pct. (.697), all of which were career-highs. She also started all 35 of the team's games behind the plate. Her .495 batting average this season ranked 15th in the nation and also ranks third all-time in Chapman's single-season record books.
Javier also set career-highs in nearly every offensive category, hitting .391 with 24 RBI, seven doubles and seven triples. Her seven triples ranked 14th in the nation and are the most in a single season by a Chapman player since 1997.
Chapman finished the season with a 22-13 record which marks the program's 14th winning season since becoming Division III in 1995.
The NFCA is the professional growth organization for fastpitch softball coaches from all competitive levels of play. The NFCA is comprised of coaches from club ball, high school and colleges as well as umpires and other important members of the fastpitch community. Today, the NFCA has grown from 40 members in 1983, to over 4,300 members.
