Berry slugs three homers, hands Chapman doubleheader sweep

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University softball team dropped a pair of games to Berry College (Ga.) 10-2 and 4-0 on Tuesday night in a non-conference doubleheader at El Camino Real Park. The Panthers were plagued by four errors in the first game and managed only two hits in the second contest as their losing streak was extended to four games.

Game 1: Berry 10, Chapman 2

The Vikings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when sophomore C Abby Daniels doubled off of the base of the left field fence scoring freshman OF Brittany Ferrell from second base. Sophomore Shelby Smith then belted a three-run home run to left, giving the Vikings a 4-0 first-inning lead.

In the top of the third, Berry began the inning with back-to-back singles off of Chapman sophomore RHP Natalie Both. Smith then snuck a ball just inside the left field foul pole for her second home run of the game and giving the Vikings a 7-0 lead. Smith finished the game 3-for-4 with six RBI.

Chapman got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore OF Amy Serven struck a leadoff single to left. Serven, who finished the game 3-for-3, would later come around to score, making the score 7-1. The Panthers scored another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by freshman IF Amber Perez. But Berry scored a run in each of the final three innings to win going away.

Game 2: Berry 4, Chapman 0

The Panthers could not find an answer for Berry RHP Allison Coronado. The sophomore gave up only two hits all night, a fifth-inning single up the middle from sophomore C Lisa Perez, and a sixth-inning infield single to Serven.

Viking freshman IF Allison DeBusk scored in the top of the third on an RBI groundout from sophomore OF Haley Smith, snapping a scoreless tie and giving Berry a 1-0 lead.  The Vikings broke the game open with three more in the seventh, thanks to a two-run inside-the-park homer by IF Sarah Brown.

Coronado picked up the win allowing only two hits and three walks, while recording two strikeouts.
