ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team dropped a pair of games to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday in the Panthers home opener at El Camino Real Park. The Panthers fell 13-2 in five innings in game one and 16-3 in game two.
Game 1: Claremont-M-S 13, Chapman 2
The Athenas came out strong in game one, scoring two unearned runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Claremont-M-S then tacked on another four in the third with a pair of hits and a pair of sac flies to pad their lead over Chapman to 7-0. The Athenas then added one in the fourth and added five in the fifth to earn the 13-2 win.
Sophomore Kristen Weiser knocked in sophomore Kristen Yee on a line drive to left to keep the Panthers in the game 8-1 in the fourth. Senior Gabrielle Leveratto hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the fifth to score the Panthers second run of the game.
Claremont-M-S out-hit Chapman 13-4 with Weiser picking up a pair of Chapman hits and an RBI.
Game 2: Claremont-M-S 16, Chapman 3
In game two, Claremont-M-S took an early lead again scoring one run in the first to edge the Panthers 1-0. The Athenas then scored three runs in the third to add to their lead, 4-0. Claremont-M-S tacked on one in the fifth and four in the sixth to improve to a 9-0 lead.
Trailing 9-0, Chapman posted three runs in the sixth to close in on the Athenas 9-3. Freshman Elizabeth Runge drove in a pair of runs for the Panthers in the sixth and finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Athenas pushed another seven across the plate in the seventh to secure the 16-3 win in game two and the sweep over Chapman.
Senior pitcher Natalie Both (0-2) pitched both games for Chapman racking up eight strikeouts in eight innings on the mound.
Chapman will return to El Camino Real Park Saturday for a home doubleheader against University of Puget Sound. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
