Perez goes yard, Both fans 15 in sweep of MSOE

ORANGE, CALIF. – The bats came out early in both games of a doubleheader sweep over the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 4-2 and 14-6. Senior Lisa Perez had three extra-base hits in the sweep while fellow senior Natalie Both was stellar in the circle.

Game 1 – W, 4-2

Both set the tone early by striking out the side in order in the first and going on to record 12 strikeouts in the game. She walked only three while holding MSOE to just two runs on two hits while tossing a complete game.

After Both struck out the side to start the game, two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Panthers in the bottom of the first. Perez delivered a two-out single up the middle to score a pair and give Chapman a 2-0 lead.

Chapman loaded the bases again in the second and cashed in another run when freshman Sydney Englehardt drew a bases loaded walk. MSOE limited the damage to just a run bit still trailed 3-0.

MSOE was able to get to Both in the third as both of their hits led to both of their runs in the inning. A walk and single set the stage for Rachel Ziemba. Ziemba came through with a bases clearing triple to cut Chapman's lead to one.

Both went on to retire the final 13 batters in a row, including seven with a strikeout, while the Panthers added an insurance run in the fifth to secure the win.

Game 2 – W, 14-6 (6 inns.)

MSOE jumped on top early but the Panthers took advantage of seven errors in the game to grab the run-rule victory in the nightcap. Senior Amy Serven went 4-for-4 to lead the Panther offense, scoring four times and driving in three.

After MSOE scored in the top of the first, the Panthers responded with three runs in the second and a six spot in in the third. Sophomore Lindsay Rawls tied the game up at 1-1 with an RBI double and Serven gave CU the lead with a single later in the second. Senior Larissa Rinauro's grounder brought in a third run.

Perez set the tone for a huge third inning with a leadoff solo blast to left – her first of the season. Freshman Analisa Ruff smacked a bases loaded triple to clear the bases and plate three more in the big inning that gave CU a 9-1 lead.

MSOE momentarily avoided the run-rule as its bats came to life in the fifth. The Raiders hit all the way through the order and brought the tying run to the plate but only narrowed the gap to 9-6. Chapman responded with two runs in the fifth and scored three more with the help of a couple errors in the sixth to end the game early.

Freshman Samantha Whalen got the start in the circle and the first win of her career. She cruised through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth. Both came in to close it out and struck out three more to give her 15 Ks on the day.

The Panthers remain home this weekend and jump back into conference play with a SCIAC doubleheader against Cal Lutheran at noon at El Camino Real Park.
