Seniors shine in Senior Day split

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team split with Pomona-Pitzer on Senior Day Saturday at El Camino Real Park in the Panthers final home doubleheader of the season. The Panthers suffered a 3-0 loss in game one, but slugged out a monster 8-0 win in game two.

Game one: Pomona-Pitzer 3, Chapman 0

Heading into the third senior Aryana Yee singled through the right side to score Emily Rockhill and lift the Sagehens to an early 1-0 lead. The Sagehens added another run on an RBI double to left center by Rockhill in the fifth to edge the Panthers 2-0. Pomona added its third run in the sixth on another RBI double to secure the 3-0 win.

The Panthers had a chance to score in the first when freshman Analisa Ruff sparked a hit parade to load the bases but ultimately came up short. Ruff finished game one 3-for-4, collecting three of the Panthers six hits.

Senior P Natalie Both suffered the loss while striking out four, but set a CU record, tossing seven full innings to become the first Panther to ever pitch 500 innings in a career.

Game 2: Chapman 8, Pomona-Pitzer 0   

In game two, the bats came alive for Chapman who scored eight runs off of 11 hits to earn the six inning mercy over Pomona-Pitzer. Freshman Samantha Whalen tossed six innings for the Panthers giving up seven hits to improve to 5-9 on the season.

Sophomore Kristen Weiser drove in the first run for the Panthers on an RBI down the middle to take the lead 1-0 in the first. In the third, junior Amber Perez and senior Gabrielle Leveratto both went yard, driving in three runs apiece to bring in six runs for the Panthers who would take a 7-0 lead. Perez then singled through the five-six hole to drive in the Panthers eighth and final run in the bottom of the six.

Chapman will play its final six games on the road beginning with a doubleheader at Redlands on Wednesday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
