Gilles begins career as SCIAC Athlete of the Week

ORANGE, Calif. – If she had any nerves before her first college game, they certainly didn't show. Freshman Vanessa Gilles had a dominant weekend at the plate and was rewarded with SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors.

Gilles hit .778 in four games last week, going 7-for-9 with three double, a homer and three walks. She scored four times and drove in four runs to lead the Panthers in both categories. The newcomer from San Rafael, Calif., put up eye-popping numbers with a 2.277 OPS.

She hit safely in all four games with three multi-hit games. She was 1-for-1 with a walk in the first game of the doubleheader against Whitworth with her one hit being a double off the wall.

Gilles did not strikeout and hit safely in six consecutive at-bats after flying out in her first-ever collegiate at bat. She safely reached first in nine consecutive plate appearances.
