Lloyd gets 600th win with run-rule of Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. –  Head coach Janet Lloyd won her 600th career game as the Chapman University softball team split a doubleheader with Redlands on Friday. The Panthers won the second game of the doubleheader in run-rule fashion with a 14-6 victory in five innings after dropping the first game 8-4 in extras.

In her 23rd season leading the Panthers, Lloyd picked up her 600th victory – the most in Chapman history. She is the 16th winningest active Head Coach in Division III and just the 28th Division III coach to win 600 games.

Game 1 – L, 8-4 (10 inns.)

For the second time in a three-game stretch, the Panthers needed extra innings to decide a SCIAC game. This time the Panthers ended up on the wrong end of the dramatic win with an 8-4 loss in the 10th inning.

After ending the ninth inning with a 4-4 tie, the international tiebreaker came in to play to start the 10th. Redlands sacrificed the runner to third but Jennifer Ng launched a two-run homer to left to break the deadlock. Redlands took advantage of a couple of errors in the inning to plate two more runs and held on for the win.

Chapman took the initial lead with three runs in the first. Senior Amber Perez drove in the first run with a one-out single and freshman Samantha Tong squeezed in the second run for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Vanessa Gilles' sacrifice fly brought in Perez for the 3-0 lead.

Redlands chipped back in it with a run in the second and two more in third to tie it up at 3-3. In the sixth, an RBI-single gave Redlands a 4-3 lead. Down to their last three outs, sophomore Sydney Engelhardt led off the seventh with a base hit, was sacrifice to second and scored on Tong's single into right to tie the game back up at 4-4 and send it to extra innings.

Neither team could get much going in the eighth or ninth but Redlands had the scoring burst in the 10th to take the win. Lindsey Mifsud went the distance for Redlands, tossing all 10 innings to get the win. The Panthers sent three pitchers into the circle with junior Sarah Taketa getting the start but sophomore Samantha Whalen taken the loss.

Game 2 – W, 14-6

The Panthers bounced back in a big way to get their coach the milestone victory. Chapman used a seven-run fourth to jump way out in front and scored the clincher in the fifth for the run-rule win.

Chapman jumped out early again, plating two runs in the first on singles from Perez and junior Kristen Weiser. Weiser had three hits in the game with an RBI and a run scored. Perez drove in two runs in the second game to give her three for the day.

After Redlands put up four runs in the second, Chapman responded with a run in the bottom half. In the third, Engelhardt gave Chapman the lead again with a two-RBI triple. The throw in from center cleared everyone's head and Engelhardt came home on the error as the throw rolled into the visiting dugout.

Chapman wasn't anywhere near done as the Panthers sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth for seven runs and a 13-4 lead. The first eight batters of the inning reached first safely and the first seven scored as the Panthers laced eight singles in the inning.

Engelhardt had another RBI-hit to finish the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Freshmen Sarah Sumida and Michaela Foisy also had three hits with Sumida driving in two more runs after driving in one in the first game.

Sophomore Emily Claudy tossed all five innings to get her first win as a Panther and Lloyd's 600th. Redlands stayed alive with two more runs off Claudy in the fifth but the Panthers quickly closed out the win in the bottom half. Weiser singled to lead off and was replaced at first by freshman Morgan Gallegos. Gallegos moved up to third after a sacrifice and error and scored when freshman Kyra Gallego dropped a bloop single to right.

The Panthers head to Occidental tomorrow to continue the SCIAC schedule but return home on Mar. 12 to take on Denison in a noon doubleheader.
