Softball falls twice to Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team fell twice to Pomona-Pitzer on Friday, 4-2 and 7-3. It marked the first time that Chapman had been swept at home this season.

Game 1 – L, 4-2

Pomona-Pitzer came out ahead in the pitchers' duel to start the day. Sophomore Emily Claudy and Liz Rodarte took turns controlling the game from the circle.

Claudy allowed three runs on three hits over her six-plus innings. She struck out four without issuing a walk. Rodarte struck out eight and allowed just two runs on six hits for the complete game win.

The Sagehens were the first to get on the scoreboard with a wild pitch in the third. Claudy held them off the board over the next few innings while the Panthers' offense also struggled to get much going. In the sixth, both teams woke up the bats.

Rodarte helped herself with an RBI-single in the top half for a 2-0 lead. The Panthers responded in the bottom half by loading the bases. Junior Kristen Weiser came through with the clutch hit to tie the game. With two outs, Weiser hit a line drive to left center that brought two runs in for a 2-2 tie.

Pomona-Pitzer took full advantage of a leadoff single in the seventh, sparking a two-run rally to retake the 4-2 lead. Rodarte quickly recorded the first two outs in the bottom half of the inning but freshman Sarah Sumida smacked a two-out triple to bring the tying run to the plate and cap her 3-for-3 game at the plate. Rodarte stranded Sumida on third with a strikeout to end the game.

 Game 2 – L, 7-3

The Panthers looked to have woken up the bats early with a run in the first and another in the second. Freshman Michaela Foisy sped around third after a throw got away from the first baseman to put the Panthers on the board in first. Freshman Samantha Tong knocked in the second run with an RBI-single in the second.

The Sagehens scratched across a run in the top half of the second but did most their damage in the fourth. Pomona-Pitzer scored five runs in the inning to take a 6-2 lead. Maddy Kim's bases loaded triple brought in three of those runs to fuel the rally.

Tong drove in another run with a triple of her own in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 6-3 but the Panthers couldn't overcome the big inning. She finished the game 4-for-4 with the two RBIs and was a homer shy of the cycle.

The Panthers head to Cal Lutheran on Friday and host Occidental
