Panthers lose pair of games to Whittier

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team lost both games of the series to Whittier this afternoon. Freshman Michaela Foisy went 1-for-3 and 2-for-4 with the lone run in the first game.

Game 1: Chapman 1, Whittier 7

Scoring started in the first inning, when both teams each scored a run to tie it up. Junior Kristen Weiser singled up the left side to bring in Foisy. The Panther's offense fell short, as the Poets would score six more runs of their own to take the victory.

Four Panthers recorded hits, with Weiser leading the way going 1-for-3 and batting in a run. Freshman Sarah Sumida also went 1-for-3, while sophomore Elizabeth Runge went 1-for-1.

Game 2: Chapman 4, Whittier 5

Game two was a pitcher's duel as both pitchers went for all seven innings. Whittier's Samantha Blum allowed seven hits and four runs, recording one strikeout. Sophomore Emily Claudy also allowed seven hits and recorded one strikeout.

The Poets struck early, going ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the second, but Chapman swung right back, scoring three runs in the top of the second to come within one. A fifth-inning run pulled the Panthers back within one, but they could not capitalize in the final two innings.

The Panthers recorded seven hits with three different players hitting in runs. Led by the freshmen, Sumida, Christine LoVerde, and Morgan Gallegos all tallied one RBI.

As they round out their season, Chapman will travel to the University of La Verne on Sat. April 22 and to the University of Redlands on Fri. April 28, but will return home on Sat. April 29 in their final home game of the season.
