Three newcomers recognized on All-SCIAC teams

ORANGE, Calif. – Three members of the Chapman University softball team earned All-SCIAC honors. Freshman Michaela Foisy headlined Chapman's selection with a spot on the First Team. Sophomore Emily Claudy and freshman Sarah Sumida rounded out the postseason honors, earning spots on the Second Team.

The All-SCIAC First team selection comes after a breakout season from the rookie. She leads the Panthers with a .373 batting average and 44 hits. Her .375 record in SCIAC games ranked fourth in the conference while she ranked fifth in the SCIAC with 20 runs scored. The Discovery Bay, Calif., native stole 29 bases in her first season at Chapman, shattering the single-season school record of 22 set by Katie Dorish in 2003 and ranking second in the SCIAC.

Claudy received the All-SCIAC nod in her first season as a Panther. Her 1.76 ERA in SCIAC games was the second-lowest in the conference. The transfer from Moorpark, Calif., was the only pitcher in the SCIAC with more than four innings pitched to not allow a home run during the SCIAC season. She started 12 games this year and came out of the bullpen four more times, posting a 5-4 overall record with a 2.11 overall ERA.

Sumida was another freshman force in the lineup to earn Second Team honors. She ranked fourth on the team with a .342 overall batting average. She led the team with six doubles and four triples this season with all four triples coming in SCIAC games and ranking second-most in the conference.

The Panthers return to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the first time since 2014 as the No. 4 seed after winning four in a row, sweeping both Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in their final games of the regular season.
