Panthers lose first game of SCIAC Tournament

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University softball team dropped game one of the double-elimination SCIAC Tournament this afternoon to La Verne. The Panthers recorded four hits from four different players in their 5-0 loss.

Freshman Michaela Foisy and sophomore Elizabeth Runge both went 1-for-3 against the Leopards. Runge caught fire late in the game, hitting her first double of the season in the top of the seventh inning.

The other two hits for the Panthers were recorded by freshman Sarah Sumida and sophomore Analisa Ruff, who both went 1-for-2 on the afternoon with a pair of singles.

The Panthers tried to rally from down 2-0 going into the top of the sixth inning behind pitcher Sarah Hartmann, who pitched all six innings and allowed just two earned runs while also striking out one batter. Runners were on second and third with two outs when senior Amber Perez popped up to third base, leaving the runners stranded. The Leopards ran away with the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs to earn the final score of 5-0.

Sophomore Carly Condon led the Leopards, going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run.

The Panthers face off against the loser of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Whittier May 6 at 9:30 am at La Verne.
