Foisy and Sumida finish debut seasons with All-Region honors

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshmen Michaela Foisy and Sarah Sumida capped off their breakout debut seasons with All-West Region third team honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The rookie from Discovery Bay, Calif. also took home All-SCIAC honors this year after she was selected to the First Team immediately following the regular season. Having missed just one game, the freshman was the ultimate offensive force for the Panthers.

Foisy led Chapman in several categories in her first season, batting .368, smacking 46 hits, and tallying 30 runs. She also rounded out her first year leading the team with an on-base percentage of .402.

The rookie stole 30 bases this season, shattering the single-season Chapman record set by Katie Dorish in 2003. She went 30-for-32, which ranks her second all-time at Chapman in stolen-base percentage (.937). Foisy finished her debut season 28th in the nation in stolen bases per game, stealing 0.77 bases per game.

Sumida also received All-SCIAC honors in her breakout season. The utility player earned a spot on the Second Team after helping lead the Panthers to their first post-season SCIAC Tournament appearance since 2014. The Honolulu, Hawaii native hit .344 in her first season, ranking fourth on the Chapman squad.

Sumida was a force for the Panthers at the plate, crushing six doubles and five triples to lead the Chapman offense. The rookie drove in 15 runs, tying for second on the team with two of her teammates.

Sumida laid down 13 sacrifice bunts, which led both Chapman and the SCIAC. Missing just one game, she also led the team in plate appearances (145) and total bases (45).
