Trio of softball players selected to All-SCIAC
ORANGE, Calif. – Three members of the Chapman University softball team were selected to All-SCIAC teams earlier this morning. Junior Elizabeth Runge and sophomore Michaela Foisy headlined the awards with First Team selections, while senior Sarah Taketa earned a spot on the Second Team.
Runge put up career numbers in her third season as a Panther. The right fielder tallied a career-high 45 hits, 21 RBIs and 19 runs scored. She was solid against SCIAC opponents, recording 35 hits and 18 RBIs in conference games. The Poway native ranked second on the squad with a career-high .405 batting average and led the Panthers with 13 doubles. She also posted career-bests in on-base percentage (.441) and slugging percentage (.541) this season.
This is Foisy's second consecutive year with a spot on the First Team after being selected for the award in her first year as a Panther. The sophomore led the Panthers this season with 61 hits, 37 runs scored and five triples. She broke the Chapman single-season record that she set last year with 32 stolen bases this season. She also added on to the Chapman career stolen base record that she broke earlier this season.
The Discovery Bay native led the squad and ranked second in the SCIAC with a career-high .449 batting average. The leadoff hitter also led the Panthers with career-bests in on-base percentage (.476) and slugging percentage (.596). Foisy was a force against SCIAC opponents, tallying 45 hits, four triples, 24 stolen bases and her first career home run in conference games.
In her final season as a Panther, Taketa earned a spot on the Second Team after helping Chapman as both a third baseman and a pitcher. At the plate, the senior tallied 25 hits, 10 RBIs, 12 runs, three doubles and a triple. She saw 47 at-bats against SCIAC opponents in which she posted 21 hits, nine RBIs and 10 runs scored. Taketa also posted a career-high .357 batting average after stepping up to the plate 78 times this season.
In the circle, Taketa made 21 appearances, starting 14 games. She posted a career-best 5-5 season record with one save under her belt. The Redmond, Wash. native struck out 24 batters and posted a 4.91 ERA in 71.1 innings pitched. Of those 24 strikeouts, 12 of them came against SCIAC opponents. She earned the only save of her career against Cal Lutheran after pitching the last two outs in extra innings to preserve the victory for the Panthers.
Chapman finished the 2018 season with a 17-23 record and tied for sixth place in the SCIAC standings. Sophomore Morgan Gallegos was recognized for her character on and off the field, earning a spot on the SCIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
