Whalen earns SCIAC award for second time

ORANGE, Calif. - Senior Samantha Whalen helped lead the Chapman softball team to a perfect 4-0 week, earning SCIAC Hitter of the Week for the second time this year. Whalen helped the Panthers to a sweep of Cal Lutheran on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a huge sweep of Whittier on Saturday.

The Livermore native hit .500 with eight RBIs and five runs scored. Two of her six hits were extra base hits, including a two-RBI double in the first game against Cal Lutheran and an inside-the-park home run against Cal Lutheran in the night cap. The captain drew two walks and did not strikeout once in her 12 at-bats, earning an OPS of 1.517.

Whalen also did work in the circle for the Panthers, pitching a complete game as Chapman beat Whittier 5-2 in the first game on Saturday. She allowed just five hits and two runs while striking out one to earn her second win of the season. Whalen also played first and third base this week, tallying 12 assists and 12 putouts to cap off a huge week for Chapman.

Whalen took care of business in the box, in the circle and in the field as Chapman stayed in third place in the SCIAC standings.

The Panthers hit the road this weekend before returning to El Camino Real Park on Saturday, April 20 to host Pomona-Pitzer in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
