Kelly, Lauwers toss gems in doubleheader sweep

ORANGE, Calif. – The pitchers tossed another pair of gems to lead the Chapman University softball team to a Super Bowl Sunday sweep of visiting Puget Sound. Freshman Jillian Kelly tossed another shutout in a 2-0 game one win and sophomore Simi Lauwers was solid in a 9-1 run-rule victory in game two.

Game 1 – W, 2-0

Less than a week after tossing a no-hitter in her collegiate debut, Kelly spun a two-hit shutout and struck out 12 to improve to 2-0 on the year. After giving up a leadoff single, she struck out seven of the next eight batters to set the tone for the morning win.

Chapman provided immediate support when freshman Samantha Kennedy scored on a ground ball to short. In the second, senior Annika Briski scored on an error to give Chapman it's second run.

Junior Emily Hayes had two singles to lead the offense.

Game 2- W, 9-1

The Panthers rallied for four runs in the first and four more in the sixth to claim in run-rule victory in game two. Lauwers allowed just one run on one hit, struck out five and walked three to pick up her second win.

Senior Julia Muniz tripled in a pair of runs to highlight a four-run rally in the first. Junior Gracie Rose drove in a run in each long rally, singling in a run in the first and drawing a bases loaded walk in the sixth.

The Panthers pounded out 10 hits as a team as the Loggers struggled to rally. Chapman improved to 4-0 to start the year.

Chapman takes on Pacific Lutheran next Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
