11 women's swimming school records fall at PCSC Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Chapman University women's swimming team broke 11 school records at the four-day Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) Championships at La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center over the weekend. The team set more school records at the 2012 Championships than any previous year.

Sophomore Julie Case led the way, setting four Chapman records which earned her Division III Swimmer of the Meet. She set school records in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.84), 500-yard freestyle (5:05.02), 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.74) and 1,650-yard freestyle (17:24.94).

In the 200 free, Case topped the eight-year school record time of 1:56.35 previously set by Kati Wise. On Saturday, Case broke records in the 1,000 free and 1,650 free by more than 30 seconds in each. She swam the 1,000 free 35 seconds faster than the previous time and then swam the 1,650 free just under a minute faster than the old record.

Case's performance qualified her for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 1,650 free as part of the 'B' cut. This cut qualifies her to compete if there is a spot available after the 'A' cut individuals and teams are chosen. She becomes the third swimmer in Chapman history to qualify for the championships, and will find out if she makes the final cut Feb. 27.

Sophomore Alex Carubis set records in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.94) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:39.99). In addition, Carubis and Case were part of three record-breaking relay events, with Case anchoring two of them.

Chapman relay records were set in the 200-yard and 400-yard medley, with times of 1:53.52 and 4:05.15, respectively. The 200-yard (1:41.18), 400-yard (3:39.22) and 800-yard (7:51.15) freestyle relay performances also marked school records that fell before the weekend was over. The 200-yard relay team of Amanda Morris, Samantha McLaughlin, Alex Carubis and Kirsten Spicer in both the free and medley beat the previous records by less than a second.

Alex Chan swam for Chapman on the record-setting 400-yeard medley relay team as well.
