Men's, women's swimmers make season debut at Pomona Relays

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University women's and men's, yes men's, swimming teams made their season debut at the Pomona-Pitzer Fall Relays on Saturday in Claremont. Both the men's and women's teams finished in third place in the three-team meet that also featured Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier College.

The Panther men were competing for the first time ever as a varsity team for Chapman, struggling to earn many points in any of the events. Chapman totaled just 11 points to Pomona's 161 and Whittier's 84, five of which came in the 400-yard individual medley relay for the team's third-place finish. The Chapman foursome of Rory Stewart, Sean Reed, Samuel Gaye and James Gaskin finished with a time of 4:07.93 in the event.

Chapman's women fared a little better, losing to Pomona-Pitzer 172-45 and Whittier 78-45. The Panthers' best finish came in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Samantha Martin, Shea Pitoy, Keely Dulaney and Kirsten Spicer placed second in the event with a time of 3:55.22.

The Panthers also earned several third-place finishes in the meet, including in the 400-yard IM relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. In the 400 IM relay, returning swimmers Alex Carubis, Sami McLaughlin, Amanda Morris and Anna Price earned a time of 4:29.53.

Spicer and Martin later teamed with Riley Ford and Kassy Parker for a time of 1:45.64 in the 200 free relay.

Chapman will travel to Redlands on Saturday for the annual Redlands Pentathlon beginning at 10 a.m.
