Carubis, Boal lead Panthers in Allred Pool opener

ORANGE, Calif. – A pair of wins each by sophomore Alex Carubis (women's) and senior Hayden Boal (men's) paced the Chapman University swimming and diving teams in their home-opening non-conference meet against visiting Lock Haven University (Pa.) and Soka University on Friday afternoon at the Allred Aquatics Center.

Carubis captured first place in both the 100-yard freestyle (57.6) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.0) to lead the way on the women's side. Chapman finished 1-2-3 in both races with junior Julie Case (57.94) and sophomore Kassy Parker (1:00.74) finishing right behind Carubis in the 100 free, while freshmen Shea Pitoy (2:44.34) and Ali Marchand (2:45.16) did the same in the 200 breast.

Carubis is Chapman's school record holder in the 200 breast with a time of 2:27.99 set back in 2011.

For the men, Boal was the top finisher in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.21, shaving .23 seconds off his previous season best. He also claimed first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.79, almost three seconds better than his career-best.

The Chapman women capped the afternoon with a win in the 400-yard freestyle medley with a time of 3:48.68, a Panthers team consisting of sophomore Kirsten Spicer, seniors Amanda Morris and Sami McLaughlin, and sophomore Riley Ford.

McLaughlin was the fasted in the pool for the women, with a first-place swim in the 50-yard freestyle and a time of 25.86. Morris also finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:15.93 – a season best.

In addition, Pitoy defeated all comers in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:23.71, shaving more than a second off of her season low.

The meet was Chapman's first at home this season and served as a primer for the Panthers' SCIAC matchup with Whittier College on Saturday morning at the Allred Pool. That meet will begin with the diving competition at 10 a.m.
