Case, Boal lead Panthers in SCIAC Championship debut

ORANGE, Calif. - It was a career day for Julie Case and Hayden Boal as they added their names to the Chapman University swimming and diving record books in the Panthers' SCIAC Championship debut.

Case won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:32.22 while leading the women to a fifth place finish overall. Despite a last place finish for the men, Boal stood out as he finished with school records in the 200 freestyle (1:43.29) and 500 freestyle (4:38.50).

Case's win in the 1650 free earns her a "B" cut time with the chance to compete in the NCAA division III national championships in Shenandoah, Texas. Her fourth-place performance in the 200 free also earned her a school record with a time of 1:54.57.

The Panthers showed a strong finish in the 200 freestyle relay where Amanda Morris, Sami McLaughlin, Riley Ford, and Kirsten Spicer finished fourth. Chapman earned another fourth place finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay led by Case, Morris, Alex Carubis, and Samantha Martin.

The Panthers had relay contributions to the record books as well, with the foursome of Morris, McLaughlin, Carubis, and Spicer setting new marks with sixth place finishes in both the 200 medley relay (1:52.07) and the 400 medley relay (3:39.68).

The women's team received two fourth place finishes, one from Case in the 500 yard freestyle (5:07.20) and the other from the foursome of Spicer, Ford, Morris and McLaughlin in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:38.62). Spicer set an individual school record in the heat, finishing the 50 free in 24.74 (leading off the relay).

Kiernan Gilbert, a senior diver, finished the championships placing fourth in the women's 1-meter while earning a score of 306 over 11 dives. Sophomore Darcy Hardwick placed 10th in the 1-meter at a score of 125.3.

The 3-meter wasn't much different for Gilbert as she dove for a score of 279.75 earning a fifth place finish. Closely following in sixth was freshman Jamie Ralph who scored 267.75.

Boal contributed heavily to the men's team as he finished his swimming career holding six Chapman school records, two of which came this weekend. His first record came in a fifth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle at a time of 4:38.50 and second in the 200 free at 1:43.29. He also swam the 650 freestyle at a time of 16:44.71 earning a ninth place finish.

The strongest finish for the men's team came in their sixth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay by a foursome consisting of Boal, Erik Murata, James Gaskin, and Michael McGibbons. In addition, the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Boal, Cade Proulx, Sean Reed, and McGibbons finished in eighth.

Kale Wiik led the men's diving as he finished 11th in the mens 3-meter with a score of 124.65.

It was the Panther's first season competing in the SCIAC and for the men, their first as a recognized NCAA division III team.
