Diver sets school record, lands in fifth at SCIAC Championships

COMMERCE, Calif. – Chapman University men's diver Bobby Herrman earned fifth place at the SCIAC Championships at the Brenda Villa Aquatics Center on Thursday in the 3-meter springboard event, setting a Panther record in the process. The senior will compete one final time in the 1-meter springboard beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Herrman set a Chapman record with an 11-dive score of 414.0 and leapfrogged Cal Lutheran's Joey Zielsdorf in the scoring after the two finished 5-6 in the preliminary event earlier Thursday. Herrman was just 18.65 points behind Ryan Brem of Cal Lutheran for fourth place.

His highest-scoring dive of the day was his first dive of the finals, an inward 2.5 somersaults in a tuck position that earned six 7s and one 7.5 from the judges. He followed that up with his most difficult dive (2.8 degree of difficulty) – a forward 3.5 somersaults in a tuck that registered a pair of 6.5 scores.

On the women's side, junior Jamie Ricklin and sophomore Jamie Ralph placed 13th and 14th, respectively in the 1-meter springboard preliminaries on Thursday, failing to qualify for the finals. Ricklin narrowly edged Ralph with a score of 282.9 to 280.6.

The first full day of swimming and diving events begins on Friday at 9 a.m.
