Lee sets CU record in 200 Fly, places in three events

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened SCIAC competition at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday with mixed results. The Panther women split the meet, defeating Occidental College 156-136, while falling to reigning conference champions CMS 211-86. Meanwhile, the men lost to both Oxy 183-99 and Claremont 233-55 on Saturday.

It was men's freshman Jonathan Lee who paced the Panthers in the waters, breaking a Chapman record with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.90. Lee's record swim broke a three-year old benchmark set by Nick Tossey (2:02.84) by nearly four seconds. He also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.05, just 0.57 seconds off the leader Tim Storer from CMS and also finished third in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.48.

On the women's side, senior Kirsten Spicer had a fast day, earning Chapman's only first place of the meet in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.07, just 0.33 off her own school-record pace. She then placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 56.64, just one second behind the leader.

On the diving board, Chapman earned four second-place finishes as freshman Kayla Dimicco narrowly missed first in both the women's 1-meter and 3-meter events, earning scores of 182.75 and 196.75, respectively. Freshman Joey Luba also earned runner-up scores of 227.50 and 219.25 in the men's 1-meter and 3-meter springboards.

Chapman's men's and women's teams will now take a month-long holiday hiatus before returning to SCIAC competition with their home opener on Jan. 10 at the Allred Pool, where the Panthers will host Whittier College beginning at 11 a.m.
