Swim & dive teams sweep dual meet with Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's swimming & diving teams both took away team victories in a SCIAC dual with Caltech at Allred Pool on Saturday. The 147-125 win is the first dual win for the men's team over a SCIAC opponent since joining the conference in 2012-13.

The men's team took the top spot in eight of the 15 events and won the final relay to secure the historic win. Sophomore Connor Broughton, freshman Chase Mitchell and freshman Richard Parnell all won a pair of individual events to lead the Panthers.

Broughton finished 1-2 with AJ Silva in the 1000 free with a time of 10:15.30 and took the 200 IM by nearly a second with a 2:02.68. Parnell and Mitchell took the two top spots in the 200 free with Parnell's 1:49.42 leading the duo. Mitchell's 2:00.27 won the 200 fly.

Parnell led another Chapman 1-2 finish in the 100 free with a 49.12. Teammate Quinn Gatestook second. The order flip-flopped in the 50 free as Gates' 22.03 won the event with Parnell coming in a close second.

Mitchell went on to win the 500 free as well with a 5:01.19. Parnell and Gates were the bookends of the 200 free relay team that also included Nick O'Neill and Quinn Riedel and secured the team win with an event winning time of 1:30.28.

The women's team dominated the meet and cruised to a 172-58 team on the strength of event wins in 12 of the 16 events. Junior Mary Welton and freshman Molly Davis each took two individual event wins to lead the Panthers. Welton won the 200 breast as well as the 1000 free. Her 11:11.91 was nearly 26 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

Davis began her day with a winning time of 1:57.94 to edge out a narrow win in the 200 free. She later won the 200 back by over four seconds. Emily Taifer won the 100 breast and Ally Haase won the 200 fly. Sara Quach led four Panthers to the top spots in the 50 free with a 25.34, edging out teammate Kristina Fong by .05 seconds. After taking second in the 1000 free, freshman Teresa Gerhold took first in the 500 free.

Sophomore Sadie Wiens win in the 200 IM was followed immediately by a 1-2 finish in the 200 free relay to end the day.

Chapman will host its annual alumni meet on Dec. 3 and will return to competition after the new year with a dual at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Jan. 7.
