Record-breaking women's relay highlights day two

COMMERCE, Calif. – The women's 200 free relay team took third and two more school records fell to highlight day two of the SCIAC Championships for the Chapman University swimming & diving teams. With a third-place finish in the relay, the women's team stayed in fourth place in the team standings while the men's team stayed in ninth.

The first school record fell during the morning's preliminary heats as freshman Sara Quach swam her way into the 50 free championship final. She sprinted to a school record of 24.22 to qualify for finals and took seventh in the championship heat in the evening.

Quach later anchored the record-breaking relay 200 free relay team, which took third. Senior Martina Exlerova led off the relay, followed by freshman Molly Davis, sophomore Kristina Fong and Quach. Each leg was faster than the previous as Quach finished off the relay with a 23.93 split for a final time of 1:37.71.

Exlerova and Fong made the consolation final of the 50 free as well and took 17th and 16th, respectively. Freshman Sabrina Evanson took 13th in the 500 free and junior Mary Welton took 18th as both swam in the consolation final of the event.

Freshman Chase Mitchell and sophomore Connor Broughton also qualified for the consolation final of the 500 free for the men's team, Mitchell took 15th and Broughton wasn't far behind in 17th.

Sophomore Quinn Gates represented the Panthers in the 50 free consolation final, swimming a 21.57 and taking 16th.

Gates best swim came as the lead leg of the men's 200 free relay where his 21.38 split helped the Panthers team of freshman Joshua Anderson, junior Jake Weber and freshman Richard Parnell to a time of 1:27.49 and a seventh place finish.

The women's team has amassed 182 points to stay in fourth place. The men's team has 99 points and trails Whittier by just 20 points in ninth. The championship meet continues tomorrow with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 400 medley relay.
