Davis breaks own record, reaches podium in day three
COMMERCE, Calif. – Freshman Molly Davis must not have been satisfied with the 200 free record she set on day one to lead off the 800 free relay. She rebroke the record today in the finals of the 200 free and took third to highlight day three of the SCIAC Championships for the Chapman University swimming & diving teams.
Both teams stayed put in the standing with the women sitting more comfortably in fourth and the men still in ninth. Davis' finals swim was one of two more school records to go down on the third day with Davis also swimming the butterfly leg of the record-breaking 400 medley relay.
Davis and fellow freshman Sara Quach continued to lead the women's team in the pool as Quach swam in her second individual final in as many days – the 100 back. Both also swam in the record-breaking relay with junior Mary Welton and sophomore Kristina Fong.
Davis took third with her school record-breaking swim in the 200 free, making her the second Panther to reach the podium in an individual event. Davis swam a 1:53.24 and was just shy of an NCAA B cut. Quach took sixth in the 100 back, swimming a 58.73 in finals after clocking in at 58.28 in the morning preliminary heat.
Davis joined sophomore diver Kellyn Toole as the Panthers to reach the podium. Toole notched another second-place finish at the championship meet but this time on the 3-meter board. She recorded a 468.6 to move up from third to second from prelims to finals.
The women's relay ended the day on a high note, smashing the previous school record with a 4:01.02 to take fourth. The men's relay took ninth with a 3:40.82. Sophomore Connor Broughton represented the Panthers in the 400 IM consolation final and took 16th in the event with a 4:17.20.
Junior Rachel Isaacs qualified for the championship final in the 100 fly as she dipped under a minute with a 59.52 in prelims. She took ninth in the championship final with a 1:00.38. The Panther placed four swimmers in the 100 breast consolation final, led by an 11th-place finish from Welton. Two more made the 100 back and 400 IM consolation final with freshman Pippa Russel taking 17th in the consolation final of the 100 fly.
The SCIAC Championship meet wraps up tomorrow with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free and the 400 free relay. The women's team has 314 points with a 43 point lead on fifth place Occidental and trails Redlands by 79 points for third. The men have totaled 128 points.
