Crewe sets another school record

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's swim and dive teams competed in their second SCIAC dual of the season against Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier this past weekend. The men beat the Poets 147-121 but fell to the Sagehens 212-79, while the women were narrowly edged out by Whittier 147-144 and also fell to Pomona-Pitzer 193-105. Freshman William Crewe led the squad, setting another school record in the 200 breaststroke.

The Issaquah, Wash. native broke two Chapman records last weekend and added one more on Saturday. He came in third place in the 200 breast with a time of 2:14.50, beating the old school record by less than a second. He also placed third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:16.44 and second in the 200 free, coming in at 1:48.20.

A trio of underclassmen also led the men throughout the dual. Freshman Simon Duyungan placed first in the 1-meter boards with a score of 214.30 and second in the 3-meter boards with a score of 191.65. Sophomore Chase Mitchell placed first in the 500 free with a time of 4:56.10 and third in the 200 butterfly at 1:57.67. Freshman Josh Modglin came in second in the 100 back with a time of 54.79.  

Leading off the women's side were a pair of freshmen. Joanna Spyrou placed first in the 500 free with a time of 5:22.47 and Hanna Heiss came in first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.71. Coming in two spots behind Spyrou in the 500 free was sophomore Teresa Gerhold who finished with a time of 5:34.46.

Freshman Jailey Reeves landed in the top-3 in two races, placing second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.71 and third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:34.34. Sophomore Molly Davis finished second in the 200 free at 1:58.50 and junior Kristina Fong finished second in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.56.

Junior Kellyn Toole has a strong showing on the boards once again, placing first on the 1-meter board with a score of 239.10. Senior Ciera Rago also continued to impress on the boards, placing third in the 3-meter dive with a score of 161.20.

The Panthers take the holiday weekend off but head back to the pool for the Winter Invitational at East Los Angeles College on Saturday Dec. 2.
