Two school records highlight final home meet

ORANGE, Calif. – Two school records went down in the final dual meet of the season for the Chapman University swimming & diving teams. The Panthers fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in both duals with the men falling 219-74 and the women suffering a 196-103 defeat.

The meet began with a school record as the men's 200 medley relay finished in a time of 1:36.72 to beat the previous school record by nearly two-and-a-half seconds. Freshman William Crewe, freshman Will Mamer, freshman Justin Lammert and junior Quinn Gates combined for the record-breaking time.

Mamer and Crewe weren't done with the record book. In the 100 breast, both men became the first Chapman male swimmers to finish a 100 breast in under one minute to set another school record. Crewe's 59.91 would have been yet another record for the star freshman but Mamer finished just ahead at 59.14 to take first in the event and set the school record.

On the diving boards, the Panthers had more benchmarks with freshman Simran Rajani qualifying for regionals on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Rajani posted a 299.70 to take second to teammate Kellyn Toole on the 3-meter and scored a 255.25 on the 1-meter. She becomes the third Chapman diver to qualify for regionals, joining Toole and male diver Simon Duyungan.

Toole took first on the 3-meter board for the women with a 323.35 and second on the 1-meter by a slim margin with a 287.1. Duyungan placed second on both boards, scoring a 289.20 on the 1-meter.

Freshman Josh Modglin had a couple of standout swims for the men's team, taking first in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.02 and second in the 100 back by .05 seconds with a 53.64. Gates also took first in the 50 free for the Panthers, finishing with a time of 22.04.

The women's team also had a pair of first-place finishes. Sophomore Ally Haase just outtouched the competition with a winning time of 2:16.39 in the 200 fly. Freshman Carina Laukaitis took the top spot in the 200 back finishing at 2:12.59.

The meet paused for a moment to celebrate the nine seniors swimming in their final home meets. One of the largest senior classes in Panther swimming & diving history.

The Panthers have just one dual meet left before heading to the SCIAC Championships. They travel to Caltech next Saturday for their final tuneup.
