Toole All-SCIAC again, Crewe demolishes school record

COMMERCE, Calif. – After day two of the SCIAC swimming and diving championships, the women sit in third place with a team score of 222 while the men are in seventh with a total score of 173. Freshman William Crewe set the pace for the Panthers, demolishing the Chapman school record in the 200 IM this afternoon.

Crewe is writing his name all over the Chapman record books in his first SCIAC Championships. The rookie set the school record in the prelims of the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.14, shattering the previous record set by Kelly Huddleston in 2015 by more than seven seconds. He then went on to finish ninth in the finals with a time of 1:54.53.

Junior Kellyn Toole earned All-SCIAC with a second place finish on the 1-meter board. This podium visit marks the third year in a row that Toole has earned All-SCIAC recognition.

Finishing just three spots behind Toole in fifth was freshman Simran Rajani with a score of 412.50. Freshman Olivia Guarino saw a top-10 finish in her first SCIAC Championships, finishing in 10th place with a point total of 349.35. The final women's diver, senior Ciera Rago, finished just behind Guarino in 13th place with a finals score of 318.90.

Freshman Theresa Gerhold started off day two of competition with a spot in the finals in the 500 free. The rookie finished in ninth place with a time of 5:19.31. Fellow freshmen Joanna Spyrou and Carina Laukaitis also competed in the 500 free finals in the B group. Spyrou finished with a time of 5:14.25, with Laukaitis following at 5:18.67. Junior Sadie Weins was the only Panther to compete in the 200 IM, finishing with a time of 2:14.02.

Junior Quinn Gates was next, taking a 12th place finish in the 50 free with a time of 21.24. Sophomore Molly Davis followed with an 11th place finish in the women's 50 free, posting a time of 24.42.

Last up on the day were the 200 free relays. The men's team of Gates, senior AJ Silva, sophomore Austin Donoghue, and freshman Justin Lammert broke the school record in the finals, finishing with a time of 1:25.32. The previous Chapman record of 1:26.65 was set in 2015. Following the eighth-place finishers was the relay team of freshmen Jacob Cardenas, Josh Modglin and Brian Kim and junior Nick O'Neill, who finished 15th with a time of 1:28.16.

The women's 200 free relay team of Weins, freshman Jailey Reeves, sophomore Natalie Neffner and junior Kristina Fong took home a fourth place finish with a time of 1:38.46. Finishing third in the "B" final was the relay team of Gerhold, Laukaitis and freshmen Hanna Heiss and Paige Gurich with a time of 1:41.06.

The Championships continue for the Panthers at Brenda Villa Aquatic Center tomorrow as they tackle the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and the 400 medley relay.
