Swim and dive continues competition at Collegiate Winter Invite

SOUTH GATE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's swim teams competed at the three-day Collegiate Winter Invite this past weekend. Both teams posted strong showings with the men taking fourth place overall and the women taking seventh.

Freshman William Cho helped lead the men's team, taking first place in both the 100 fly and 200 fly with times of 52.18 and 1:56.00, respectively. Cho also took second in the 100 breast with a time of 59.54.

Sophomore Josh Modglin also took first in two events. The Ventura native finished first in the 100 back with a time of 53.16 and earned the top spot in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.72. Freshman Brandon Leu walked away with a first place finish in the 200 IM, finishing at 1:58.97. The rookie also finished sixth in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.57.

Junior Connor Broughton saw a few top-10 finishes at the Collegiate Winter Invitational. He placed second overall in the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.91 while taking fifth in the 200 IM and 10th in the 500 free. Freshman Tevin Pak finished just two spots behind Broughton in the 400 IM, taking a fourth place finish with a time of 4:24.73. The rookie also finished just two seconds behind Broughton in the 200 IM to earn a sixth place finish while later taking fourth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.96.

Junior Chase Mitchell earned a couple of top-10 finishes in the 500 free and 200 free. He took seventh overall in the 500 free with a time of 5.00.14 and later posted a 10th place finish in the 200 free, finishing just 11 seconds behind Leu at 1:49.48.

Freshman Omar Insignares, sophomore Darren Wong and junior Michael Jahangani each saw one top-10 finish in an individual event. Insignares finished sixth in the 100 fly just under two seconds behind first-place finisher Cho. Wong took third in the 100 back with a time of 54.33, while Jahangani took eighth in the 100 breast at 1:11.58.

Three Panthers finished in the top-10 in the 50 free race. Freshman Michael Kulinich took fourth with a time of 22.23. Junior Austin Donoghue was the next Panther to finish, taking ninth with a time of 23.50 while fellow junior Nick O'Neill finished less than one second later at 23.69 to take 10th place overall.

The 200 free relay team of Leu, Donoghue, O'Neill and Kulinich took second place overall with a time of 1:28.84. Modglin, Cho, Inisgnares and Leu also took second place, this time in the 200 medley relay.

Two Chapman teams each saw top-10 finishes in both the 800 free relay and the 400 free relay. The 800 relay team of Modglin, Cho, Pak and Insignares finished in fourth place with a time of 7:28.49, followed by Wong, Mitchell, Broughton and Leu in fifth place with a time of 7:33.90. After a quick shuffle between teams before the 800 relay, Cho, Insignares, O'Neill and Donoghue took fifth place at 3:20.56. Mitchell, Modglin, Pak and Kulinich finished just four seconds behind in sixth place.

A couple of women saw top-10 finishes in their individual events. Freshman Nancy Zhu finished ninth overall in the 400 IM with a time of 4:48.08. Sophomore Jailey Reeves took ninth place in the 100 breast with a finals time of 1:08.58.

The 200 free relay team of freshman Kealani Tanizaki-Hudson, senior Kristina Fong, Zhu and Reeves started off the meet strong with an eighth place finish in the first event. Fong, Reeves, Tanizaki-Hudson and junior Molly Davis finished in 10th place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:52.91.

Two teams finished in the top-10 in the 800 free relay to round out the women's side. Senior Brooke Latner, juniors Ally Haase and Teresa Gerhold and freshman Sophia Kelsey took seventh place with a time of 8:19.28. Davis, Kelsey, junior Natalie Neffner and sophomore Carina Laukaitis finished less than 10 seconds later at 8:28.31 to finish in 10th place overall.

The Panthers take a break from competition for a month before heading to the Cal Lutheran Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5.
