Toole, Zhu help swim and dive to victory over Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's swim and dive teams competed against Redlands and Caltech at the first SCIAC dual meet of the year this past Saturday. Senior Kellyn Toole and freshman Nancy Zhu helped lead the women to a 141-97 victory over Caltech.

Toole took first place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, posting a score of 246.55 on the 1-meter and a 238.05 on the 3-meter. Sophomore Olivia Guarino took fourth on the 1-meter board with a score of 185.20 and sixth on the 3-meter board with a finals score of 155.85.

Zhu took a first place finish in the 200 IM, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the second place finisher with a time of 2:18.27. The rookie also helped the Panthers' 400 free relay to a first place finish with a finals time of 3:30.73. Zhu anchored the team of juniors Molly Davis and Natalie Neffner and senior Kristina Fong.

Two Chapman teams saw top-5 finishes in the women's 400 medley relay. Fong, Davis, sophomore Jailey Reeves and freshman Kealani Tanizaki-Hudson took third with a time of 4:09.63. Zhu, junior Ally Haase, sophomore Christina D'Incognito, and freshman Avery Tamusaitis took fifth with a finals time of 4:24.03.

Sophomore Carina Laukaitis and junior Katharine Buliga finished just six seconds apart from each other in the 1000 free. Laukaitis took second place with a time of 11:34.68, while Buliga finished third at 11:40.40. Laukaitis also took third place in the 200 back with a time of 2:17.38. Davis, Tamusaitis, Buliga and junior Teresa Gerhold all finished within four seconds of each other to take third through sixth place in the 200 free.

Reeves finished in third in the 50 free with a time of 25.85, followed by Fong in fifth at 26.16 and Neffner in sixth place less than one second later at 26.60. Neffner also took second place in the 100 free, finishing under a minute with a time of 56.94. Haase took fourth place in the 200 fly with a finals time of 2:18.78. Senior Sadie Wiens finished in fifth place at 1:00.00 on the dot. Reeves took first place in the 200 breast with a finals time of 2:30.88. Tamusaitis finished eight seconds later to take sixth place in the event.

On the men's side, sophomore diver Ned Peterson took third place on the 3-meter board with a score of 110.95. He also took third on the 1-meter board with a finals score of 148.90.

The 400 medley relay team of sophomores William Crewe and Darren Wong and freshmen Omar Insignares and Brandon Leu took second place with a finals time of 3:39.20. Leu also took first place in the 50 free with a time of 22:01, followed by freshman Michael Kulinich in fifth place at 22.45. Junior Dominic DelliQuadri and freshman Chase Bradshaw finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the 200 free.

Junior Connor Broughton took second place in the 200 IM with a finals time of 2:04.50, followed by freshman Tevin Pak who finished five seconds later at 2:09.71 to take fifth place. Insignares, Pak and junior Chase Mitchell all finished in the top-5 in the 200 fly. Insignares took first place with a time of 1:59.71. Mitchell was less than two seconds behind, taking third place at 2:01.51. Pak finished in fifth place with a time of 2:06.57.

Crewe and Broughton finished nearly three seconds apart from each other in the 200 back. Crewe took second place at 2:04.27, while Broughton finished at 2:06.88 to take third place. Freshman William Cho finished in third place in the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.35. The 400 free relay team of DelliQuadri, Kulinich, Leu and junior Austin Donoghue rounded out the men's swimmers with a second place finish in the 400 free relay.

The Panthers host Mills on Friday, Jan. 18 at 11am in their first home meet of the 2018-19 season.
