Four records fall in final day of SCIAC Championships

ORANGE, Calif. – Three school records fell as the men's and women's swim teams finished up their 2018-19 seasons on the final day of the SCIAC Championships. The women finished in fifth place overall with a total score of 413.50 while the men took seventh with a score of 287.50.

Sophomore Jailey Reeves broke her own school record in the 200 breaststroke that she set at the SCIAC Championships last year. She set the new record in the prelims with a time of 2:24.64. Junior Molly Davis also set a new record, swimming a 52.83 in the 100 free, breaking the previous record set by senior Kristina Fong by just 0.01 tenths of a second.

The women's 400 free relay of Reeves, Fong, Davis and senior Sadie Wiens made the podium again on the final day of competition, breaking the record set at last year's championships and taking third place with a time of 3:33.08. The 400 free relay team of juniors Dominic DelliQuadri and Austin Donoghue and sophomores Clint Hurdle and Justin Lammert shattered the Chapman school record and took fifth overall with a time of 3:06.84.

Junior Katharine Buliga took an 11th place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 18:27.98. Fellow junior Teresa Gerhold finished just over 30 seconds later at a time of 18:59.99 to take 17th place. Senior Brooke Latner finished three spots behind Gerhold with a time of 19:16.85.

Sophomores Hanna Heiss and Carina Laukaitis both swam in the consolation finals of the 200 back, with Heiss finishing at 2:09.45 and Laukaitis coming just three seconds later at 2:12.17.

Fong and Wiens joined Davis in the consolation final of the 100 free. Wiens finished with a time of 54.20 while Fong finished just behind her at 54.21. After breaking the school record in the 200 breast in the prelims, Reeves went on to finish eighth in the finals with a time of 2:26.33. Junior Ally Haase and sophomore Olivia Halbert both competed in the 200 fly B final. Haase finished with a time of 2:12.50 while Halbert finished three spots back at 2:18.42.

On the men's side, sophomore Josh Modglin finished seventh in the 200 back with a time of 1:53.11. Freshman Omar Insignares placed ninth in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.61. Junior Chase Mitchell, freshman William Cho and sophomore William Crewe swam in the consolation of the 200 fly. Mitchell took 13th overall with a time of 1:56.63, followed by Cho at 1:57.13 and Crewe at 1:57.58.

The freshmen squad of Insignares, Michael Kulinich, Chase Bradshaw and Brandon Leu swam in the consolation final and finished with time of 3:13.16.

The Panthers capped off a record-setting season with a great showing at the SCIAC Championships. Senior Kellyn Toole will represent Chapman at NCAA Regionals.
