Swim teams impress in return to the pool

ORANGE, Calif. – Freshman Marah Kane set a pool record as the Chapman University swimming teams turned a solid performance at their only meet of the year. The Panthers traveled to Redlands to take on Redlands and Cal Lutheran in a SCIAC tri-meet.

Kane had multiple impressive swims, including a first place finish in the 200 back. The newcomer swam a 2:09.78 to set the pool record in the event and take home on of two first-place finishes for the Chapman women's team. Kane also took second in the 100 back with a 1:00.18, followed by senior Carina Laukaitis in third.

Sophomore Riley Brownfield was dominant in the freestyle, finishing top-2 in three freestyle events. She took first place in the 100 free with a 55.05 to highlight her three events. She also took second in the 200 free and 500 free.

Junior Kealani Tanazaki-Hudson followed took third behind Brownfield in the 100 free but was less than a second behind as she finished at 55.83. She led the Panthers with a second place finish in the 100 fly, clocking in at 1:00.07. Sophomore Hannah Parulan came in right behind Tanizaki-Hudson in the 100 fly and took second in the 200 IM with a 2:14.66.

Senior Will Crewe finished off his record-breaking career with a second-place finish in the 100 back. The reigning SCIAC champion in the 100 back was Chapman's first male swimmer to win a SCIAC title.

Freshman Brandon Leung also had a second place finish for the Panthers in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.47. Sophomore Michael Garza took third in the event while also leading the Panthers in the 100 breast with a third place finish.

The women's team compiled 185 points to finish in second place of the three teams while the men's team took third. For the Panthers, the SCIAC tri-meet was their only meet of the 2020-21 season.
