Swim & dive wraps up dual season at Occidental

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University swimming & diving teams concluded the dual season with a meet at Occidental as the High Tops captured the dual win. The High Tops improved to 7-1 in the dual season with a 180-118 victory and the Low Tops fellow narrowly fell 151.5-144.5.

The Panther high tops used two relay wins to bolster the team victory, turning in a 1:50.30 in the 200 medley relay and a 3:16.92 in the 400 free relay. The 400 free relay team of Riley Brownfield, Clara Van Note, Ashlyn Walters and Tatum Chambers finished more than 18 seconds faster from their competitors from Occidental.

Earlier in the meet, Walters also won the 100 back to account for two of the Panthers' six event wins. Alexis Anderson finished with a winning time of 10:52.56 in the 1000 free. Kiana Tanizaki-Hudson, who was also on the winning medley relay, won the 100 fly with a 58.74 and Sophia Ryu took first in the 200 breast with a 2:28.19.

Ryanne Doherty topped a 1-2-3 finish for the Panthers in the 50 free with a 24.58.

The low tops meet came down to the final race of the day -the 400 free relay. Cole Kershner anchored the relay with the fastest split in the SCIAC this year and nearly brought the win for Chapman. However, Oxy's team finished just 0.21 seconds ahead to get the event win and capture the team victory.

Kershner helped the Panthers tally some points as he swept the individual sprint freestyle events. He won the 50 free with a 21.26 and captured the event victory in the 100 free with a 47.47. Jason Kim tied Thomas Hoffman from Oxy for the 100 fly win as both finished at 51.54.

Simon Jacobs nearly set a school record in the final dual meet of the season as he won the 200 breast with a 2:09.54 – just two-tenths of a second off the school record. Brandon Leung also won the 200 back for Chapman with a personal-best time of 1:57.38.

The Panthers wrapped up the dual season with the High Tops going 7-1 and the Low Tops posting a 4-4 record. The teams will prep for the SCIAC Championships, which take place at East LA College on Feb. 15-18.
