Scifres records personal best fourth week in a row
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's track and field teams saw another weekend of personal records at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #3. Freshman Sheridan Scifres is having a breakout season, recording a personal best for the fourth consecutive week.
The rookie set a new personal record in the 800-meter run. She ran a 2:27.84, coming in sixth place overall and beating her previous time by just under one second.
Sophomore Courtney Justus excelled in both the long jump and the triple jump. She placed fifth overall in the long jump with a leap of 4.74 meters (15.55 feet) and fourth overall in the triple jump, recording a jump of 10.14 meters (33.27 feet).
The fight for first place in the shot put was close, but freshman Lauren Miller came just shy of taking the number one spot. The rookie threw for 10.04 meters (32.94 feet), just 0.03 meters (0.098 feet) short of the first place finisher from Whittier.
Two more Panthers set personal records this past weekend in the mid-distance races. Freshmen Chris Pai and Ben Wasserman each set new personal bests. Pai came in 12th place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.99, nearly three seconds faster than his previous time. Wasserman set his personal record in the 1500-meter run, recording a time of 4:20.18 for a 13th place finish.
The sprinters also had some great races. Juniors Kayvan Aminzadeh and Noah Rivard both ran the 100- and 200-meter dashes, finishing neck-in-neck in both races. The two came within 0.007 seconds of each other in the 100-meter dash, with Aminzadeh coming in fifth place and Rivard in sixth. The pair didn't seem to want to get rid of each other, as they finished within 0.05 seconds of one another in the 200-meter dash. Aminzadeh finished in ninth place with a time of 23.40, while Rivard came in just behind him at 23.45.
Junior Ronald Washington also had a strong showing, coming in eight place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.59 and sixth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.19. The junior also jumped for a fourth-place finish in the long jump, recording a leap of 5.89 meters (19.32 feet).
On the throwing side of the meet, sophomore Cedric Cole and freshman Eric Ortiz also finished neck-in-neck in the discus throw. The pair finished in sixth and seventh place respectively, coming within 0.1 meters (0.33 feet) of each other.
The Panthers take a week off but return to action on Fri. April 28 and Sat. April 29 for the SCIAC Championships at Pomona-Pitzer.
