Bouldin makes history in the long jump

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior Mitchell Bouldin made school history in more ways than one with a record-shattering, SCIAC winning leap in the long jump. The men's team is in seventh and the women's team is in eighth after the first day of competition.

Bouldin's first of five jumps in the event already marked his personal-best as he broke seven meters for the first time with a leap of 7.02 meters. His second attempt was a record-breaking 7.10 meters. He continued to improve as his fourth jump shattered his PR and the school record with a leap of 7.20 meters (23 feet, 7.5 inches).

His first record-breaking leap would have won him the SCIAC title but his 7.20 meter jump won the event by more than one-tenth of a meter. He broke the oldest record in the Chapman record book. Carl Smith set the current school record in 1938.

He became the first men's track & field student-athlete to win a SCIAC title since the revival of the men's program. He is also the first Panther to break a school record since the program was brought back in 2015.

Bouldin was the only Panther to score points but several more set personal-bests. Sophomore Mia Hernandez set a personal-best and led the Panthers in the 1500-meter run with a 5:09.34, finishing 16th. Sophomore Sheridan Scifres was the highest finisher on the women's side, coming in ninth with a 2:28.47 in the 800-meter run.

Junior Ronald Washington shattered his personal-best in the 100-meter dash with an 11.24. He took 12th in the event to lead the Panthers. Sophomore Cedric Cole made the finals of the discus throw and placed ninth with a heave 37.92 meters (124 feet, 5 inches).

The SCIAC Championships wrap up tomorrow at Strehle Track on the campus of Pomona College.
