Bouldin's historic jump lands historic SCIAC honor

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior jumper Mitchell Bouldin made more Chapman University track & field history with the announcement of the SCIAC track & field awards on Thursday. Bouldin was selected by the conference coaches as the SCIAC Male Field Athlete of the Year after his performance at the SCIAC Championship last weekend.

Bouldin earned a spot on the top of the podium for the long jump at the SCIAC Championship with a leap of 7.20 meters (23 feet, 7.5 inches). Bouldin, whose personal-best was below seven meters entering the meet, jumped over seven meters on three different tries. His first jump broke seven meters, his second broke the school record, his third tied the old record and his fourth landed on 7.20 meters.

The Seattle, Wash., native made history as the first Chapman male student-athlete to reach the podium at the SCAIC Championship last year. He became the first Chapman student-athlete, male or female, to win a SCIAC title this year and was the first male to break a school record since the program's revival in 2013.

The school record he broke was set in 1938 – 79 years ago. His jump is also the 18th-longest jump of the year in all of Division III, which would qualify him for the NCAA Division III Championship in June. If Bouldin is able to keep a qualifying mark, he would be the first to do so in Chapman's Division III history.
