Throwers lead Panthers at SCIAC Championships

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's track and field teams began the SCIAC Championships at the University of Redlands on Friday. The Panthers were led by throwers sophomore Lauren Miller and junior Cedric Cole

Miller took eighth in the shot put after tossing 9.97 meters (32 feet, 8.5 inches) on her final try. Cole took sixth in the discus to score three points for the Panthers with a throw of 40.02 meters (131 feet, 3.6 inches). The pair will flip events tomorrow when the championship meet wraps up.

Junior Hannah Pickerill, sophomore Mallory Jones and freshman Gabi Siguenza all set personal records in the preliminaries. Pickerill set her personal best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 64.39. Siguenza also set a personal-best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 62.39. Jones ran a personal-best in the 1500 meter run, finishing at 5:33.67. Freshman Emma Eglinton placed ninth overall in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:20.35.

The Panthers head back to the University of Redlands tomorrow at 4 p.m. to compete in the second day of the SCIAC Championships.
