Jue becomes Chapman's all-time winningest coach with 160th victory

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University women’s basketball team won for the sixth straight game and improved to 19-1 in their last 20 games with a 56-34 victory over visiting U.C. Santa Cruz on Friday night at the Hutton Center. Of equal or greater significance, however, was a milestone victory for Panthers’ head coach Carol Jue, who became the school’s all-time winningest head coach with her 160th career victory at Chapman.

Jue surpassed her predecessor Mary Hegarty on Friday night to improve to 160-54 overall, a winning percentage of .748. She did so in just her eighth season at the helm of the Chapman women’s program, two seasons faster than Hegarty. The Panthers have averaged over 20 wins per season in that span. Hegarty was 159-92 in 10 seasons at Chapman.

Chapman (19-4) led from beginning to end, holding the Banana Slugs to just seven first half points and 10 percent shooting from the field (3-for-30). Santa Cruz was much better in the second half, but still shot just over 36 percent from the floor. The Slugs’ 34 points in a season-low for a Chapman opponent this season.

The Panthers went on a 14-0 run midway through the first half to take a commanding 20-3 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the period. Chapman led 26-7 at the intermission

Seniors Simone Ibbotson and Brandi Hood led the way with eight points each for the Panthers. Hood finished with eight rebounds, as well. The Chapman bench scored half of the Panthers’ 56 points, including six points apiece from freshman F Stephanie Servin and sophomore G Liz Hartnett.

For U.C. Santa Cruz (3-20), G Danielle Mofsowitz scored a game-high nine points on the strength of a trio of three-pointers.

The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in the West Region, improved to 10-1 at Hutton Center this season and wrap up their home schedule with a game against the University of Dallas on Sunday at 1 p.m.
