Hood's basket helps Chapman hold on for 71-69 win over Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – On the game's last possession, the Chapman University women's basketball team withstood three potential game-tying shots, to hold on and defeat the University of Redlands 71-69 on Wednesday night at the Hutton Center.

With Chapman leading by two after the go-ahead bucket scored by senior C Brandi Hood, Redlands attained possession with 23 seconds and a chance to tie the game, but a pair of shots by Redlands' senior F Courtney Carroll missed as Chapman held on for its third win in a row and eighth-straight win against Redlands (2-4). Carroll had 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocks for Redlands while Hood had 12 points and nine rebounds for Chapman.

Near the end of the first half, with Chapman (4-3) trailing 33-32, Chapman scored five-straight points in the final 1:21 to close out the half with a 37-33 lead. Sophomore G Kimi Takaoka had four of her 13 points during Chapman's run.

In the second half, the score remained close throughout with the largest lead by either team being seven points after Redlands' freshman G Kaity Lykins scored at the 13:42 mark making the score 48-41. Lykins finished with a team-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting before fouling out.

Freshman G Andrea Villanueva came up big for the Panthers in the second half with 10 of her team-high 20 points including a pair of clutch three-pointers. Her second three-pointer gave Chapman a 68-67 lead with 1:45 remaining in the game.
