Third quarter surge fuels 85-49 win over Bethesda

ORANGE, Calif. – Thirteen different players scored at least a point as the Chapman University women's basketball team downed visiting Bethesda 84-59 on Sunday. The Panthers (1-1) used a big third quarter to blow open a close game.

Bethesda closed the gap with 24 points in the second quarter as Chapman took a 38-30 lead into the locker room at halftime. A stout defensive effort in the third quarter blew open the game as Chapman outscored the visitors 31-4.

Chapman shot 70 percent in the third quarter, draining 14-of-20 shots, while holding the Flames to just 2-of-18 shooting. The Panthers forced eight turnovers in the third but turned the ball over only once. Junior Jaime Hum-Nishikado knocked down a pair of threes and scored eight out her team-high 13 points to push the Panthers way out in front.

Senior Megan Charles added in 12 points and freshman Rachel Williams scored 10 points off the bench. Williams six rebounds were tied for the team lead with junior Irma Munoz. Sophomore Katelyn Serizawa dished out five assists to go along with her five points and four rebounds.

Overall, the suffocating Panther defense forced 36 turnovers while committing only 12 turnovers. Seven players had at least seven points and the Panthers' bench combined for 43 points in the blowout win. Senior Courtney Krysl was 4-for-5 from the floor with eight points off the bench and freshman Marissa Dunn scored nine points, including a three-pointer.

Chapman shot 43 percent as a team and held Bethesda to 33.3 percent shooting. DQ Townsend led the Flames with 15 points while Brianna Davis had 15 rebounds.

The Panthers are back home next Sunday to take on nationally-ranked George Fox at 4 p.m.
